Aboard a small passenger plane flying over Tselinograd, a loud female scream suddenly rings out: the wife of a famous Turkish oligarch is going into labor. Fortunately, a doctor, a woman named Maryam, is among the passengers. She successfully delivers the baby, and in gratitude, the mother asks that Maryam's son, when he grows up, must come to Turkey and propose to her newborn daughter, Inzhu. Years pass. Tselinograd is renamed Astana, the city is rapidly growing and transforming. Maryam's son, Erlan, returns from America, where he studied architecture. And Inzhu unexpectedly abandons her wedding preparations and flies from Turkey to Kazakhstan to see the city where she was born.

The film tells the story of a boy named Ilyas, who from an early age, faces the tragedies that shook his country: hunger, war, and repression. Separated from his mother, he finds himself in an orphanage, but even in the bleakest conditions, Ilyas never loses hope. He believes, beyond the horizon, his mother still waits for him. Years pass, and Ilyas goes to the front, showing exceptional courage fighting for his homeland. Meanwhile, his mother, Mariam, never stops believing that one day she will hold her son again. Throughout their lives, long years of separation and fear persist, but a mother's love remains the bright beacon that guides Ilyas through all trials and losses.
