A modern adaptation of Alexander Pushkin's tale 'The Stationmaster', set in the Kazakh steppe. Rail inspector Aidar and his daughter Saule live in an isolated outpost amid vast expanses. Soon, French tourist Etienne appears, forced off the train with no money and no knowledge of Kazakh. Aidar shelters the traveller, introducing him to Saule. A friendship blossoms between them, gradually turning into romance. However, Saule and Etienne's relationship displeases her father. When Saule decides to leave for Europe with Etienne, Aidar furiously pursues them.
