The family of young Olzhas is engaged in horse breeding. One day, a gang of horse thieves deceitfully lure the father into a trap, kill him, and steal the herd. After the funeral, the boy's mother decides to leave their home village where she is openly disliked. But on the eve of departure, a mysterious stranger appears at the doorstep. He introduces himself as a herdsman and offers to help the family with the move. Olzhas, along with his two younger sisters and mother, set off on their journey.
