Set in the picturesque surroundings of Almaty, the kindest and most cheerful doctor, Anatoly Nikolaevich Lavrov, has been working in a cosy sanatorium for 17 years. He believes that treatment should involve not only bitter pills but also good mood. Hence, he always has a kind word or a good joke for every patient. On his 60th birthday, his colleagues Bibigul, Taken, and Murat plan a special surprise - a concert featuring all artists who were once his patients. However, all the artists turn out to be busy that very day.

The beautiful horse herder Galiya and the young collective farm horse breeder Aidar are deeply in love and their relationship is quickly leading to marriage. However, a misunderstanding occurs between them. Aidar dreams of bringing pedigree horses to the collective farm but the chairman refuses to spend money on this venture. To show how bad the collective farm horses are, Aidar decides to let his beloved girl win the upcoming horse races. But Galiya is unaware of his intentions. She also holds back her horse, hoping Aidar would catch up to her and kiss her, as per old custom. But her trick does not work: Aidar finishes last and loses Galiya's favor. The store manager Angarbay, who is also in love with the free-spirited beauty, decides to take advantage of this situation.
