As a child, Zhaksylyk had never contemplated about sports. Like many of his peers, he practiced Kazaksha-Kures at school but considered it a mere pastime. A twist of fate decided his destiny. At the veterinary institute, he had to pass a physical education test to qualify for exams. Given two choices, skiing or wrestling, Zhaksylyk chose the latter and didn't regret it. Sports seized him, training with incredible perseverance and dedication. Two years later, he was a champion of KazSSR. However, he was not selected for the USSR championship and was not considered for the 1980 Olympics. How did the great athlete overcome the biased attitudes and achieve his cherished dream?
