Set in a small Central Kazakhstan village in the early 1930s, the film chronicles the life of Zhupar, a mother of two whose husband, Asan, is arrested for horse thievery during a period of Soviet confiscation of livestock. Left alone with her children, Zhupar watches as her village deteriorates and people die of starvation or leave for nearby towns. Eventually, the lack of resources forces her to embark on a journey to find her husband in Siberia. Along the journey, she meets a diverse cast of characters, each facing their own struggles. As her supplies dwindle, Zhupar is faced with a heartbreaking choice to abandon one son so the other can survive, wrestling with the moral implications of her decision.
