In spring 1940, renowned Chinese composer Xian Xinghai arrived in the Soviet Union to compose a soundtrack for the documentary 'Yanan and the 8th Army'. He finished his work and was about to return home when World War II broke out, leading to his evacuation to Almaty. Alone and confused, he accidentally finds refuge under the roof of the local philharmonic, where a field hospital is set up in the hall, and an orchestra rehearses on stage under the guidance of Baikadamov.
