His activities drew the attention of the totalitarian regime, and his ideas were labeled anti-Soviet. Mustafa Shokay had to flee, wandering through the Caucasus, Turkey, France with his loyal wife Maria, who sacrificed her brilliant opera career for him. Even far from his homeland, he lived for its needs and aspirations, doing everything possible and sometimes impossible to realize his idealistic dream of Turkestan's independence.
