Young Zere lives in a tiny fishing village on the coast of Balkhash. Tragedy recently struck her family when their father Kadyr drowned with a boat he borrowed from local vagabond Makosh. Makosh demands compensation, but Zere's mother lacks the funds. Their family teeters on the brink of destitution. Desperate to secure a future for her daughter, Zere's mother plans to marry her off to a wealthy but old man. Zere, however, vehemently opposes this, refusing to be sold like cattle.
